Case Studies

Real work. Real outcomes.

Real work, built and delivered from inside some of the outdoor industry's most sustainability-forward brands.

The following case studies are drawn from hands-on experience as an in-house sustainability lead at Dryrobe® and Starboard, working directly inside the brands.

B Corp01 — Dryrobe

B Corp Certification: guiding a fast-growing outdoor brand through the full assessment

Leading Dryrobe® through B Corp certification in 2022, then recertificatio. Increasing the score by 10 points and leading the process through the new standards.

The challenge

B Corp certification is one of the most rigorous third-party sustainability standards available to businesses. To Dryrobe®, being a B Corp means doing the best a product-producing company can do for the outdoors. The brand is always striving to reduce its negative effect on the planet and increase its lasting positive impact.

The approach

A full gap analysis against the B Impact Assessment across all five impact areas: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, and Customers. Working cross-functionally with operations, HR, finance, and product teams, we closed gaps and documented existing practices. I managed the full submission and verification process and developed internal frameworks to maintain and improve the score over time.

Outcomes

  • Dryrobe achieved B Corp Certified status, increasing score by 10 points on recertification
  • Cross-functional sustainability governance embedded across departments
  • B Corp framework integrated into supplier onboarding and product development
  • Ongoing improvement roadmap developed for recertification under new standards
Strategy02 — Dryrobe

Climate Action Plan: a credible, public commitment to carbon reduction

Dryrobe's Climate Action Plan. A structured, publicly available document setting out the brand's carbon baseline, reduction targets, and the specific actions committed to across operations, supply chain, and product.

The challenge

Outdoor brands face increasing scrutiny from customers, retailers, and regulators on the credibility of their climate commitments. Vague pledges and aspirational language are no longer sufficient. The challenge was to produce a Climate Action Plan that was specific, measurable, and honest about where the brand was starting from and including areas where progress was still needed.

The approach

I established a carbon baseline across Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, then identified the highest-impact reduction opportunities across freight, materials, energy, and business travel. Targets were set aligned with science-based guidance, and I authored the full plan for public publication, balancing transparency about current performance with a credible forward roadmap.

Outcomes

  • Full carbon baseline established across Scope 1, 2, and 3
  • Reduction targets set in line with science-based guidance and published
  • Climate Action Plan published publicly
  • Internal carbon monitoring process established for ongoing tracking
Reporting03 — Dryrobe

Sustainability Report 2026: transparent, accountable, and built to last

Researched, authored, and produced Dryrobe's annual Sustainability Reports. An honest account of the brand's environmental and social performance, progress against targets, and where work remains.

The challenge

Annual sustainability reporting is increasingly expected by retailers, investors, and consumers. Avoiding the marketing tactics of many brands, Dryrobe®'s Impact Report acts as accountability for sustainability actions throughout the calendar year. The challenge was to produce a report that was genuinely informative: acknowledging gaps, reporting real data, and giving stakeholders a clear picture of where the brand stands.

The approach

I gathered performance data across all material sustainability topics: carbon emissions, materials and packaging, supply chain, people and community, and circular economy initiatives. The report structure focuses on progress against the previous year's commitments. Where performance fell short, we shared honestly. The report was designed to work as both an external stakeholder communication and an internal accountability tool.

Outcomes

  • Full annual sustainability report published for 2026
  • Performance data reported across all material topics
  • Progress tracked against prior year commitments
  • Used as a communication tool for trade accounts and partnerships
Carbon Emissions04 — Dryrobe

Carbon Literacy Training: embedding climate action across the whole business

Designed, accredited, and delivered a company-wide Carbon Literacy Training programme. Creating a culture of carbon accountability at HQ, across departments and Board level.

The challenge

Dryrobe® has strong sustainability ambitions but recognised that meaningful carbon reduction required more than policy. As reductions affect everyone's work, every employee needed to understand their role in reducing carbon emissions. The challenge was to make carbon literacy practical, emotionally engaging, and embedded in the operational realities of how the business actually works.

The approach

We partnered with Protect Our Winters UK to kick-start the initial Carbon Literacy journey in 2024. Two years later, I led a second round of accredited training, designed and delivered internally. The programme was accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project with Dryrobe® operational context woven throughout.

"Completing the carbon literacy training was extremely valuable because it taught me how I can effectively reduce my carbon footprint, not just at work but throughout my own life and daily activities."

— Dryrobe team member

Outcomes

  • Dryrobe® became a Silver Level Carbon Literate Organisation
  • Immediate behaviour change: increased car-sharing, cycling, and walking to work, reducing employee commuting emissions by 8%
  • Sales team began embedding carbon education into retail account onboarding
  • Freight forecasting improved to reduce last-minute air shipments
  • Programme accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project
B Corp & Supply Chain05 — Starboard

Building an environmental department across a group of brands

Taking the industry-leading windsurf and SUP brand through B Corp certification, carbon footprint reporting, and group-level supply chain programmes spanning Starboard, Severne, Airush, and SOMWR.

The challenge

Starboard had the ambition to be a genuine leader in sustainability within the watersports industry. The challenge was to build from ambitious ideas into programmes, processes, and partnerships that truly delivered across the brands, each at a different stage of their sustainability journey.

The approach

Rather than working with the brands as isolated projects, I designed a unified framework that elevated compliance across the group. While leading Starboard through its second B Corp recertification, using examples of how Starboard had evolved to become a B Corp, lending firsthand experience to the recommendations implemented across the wider group. With manufacturing occurring overseas, we wanted to ensure we worked to the highest labor standards, so we onboarded the group to the Fair Labor Association. In tandem, I managed our internal environmental projects for mangrove planting and the Plastic Offset Program, and drove rigorous verification with Verra. For SOMWR, we wanted to create more than just clothing; we used clothing to drive mangrove planting and plastic waste collection from shorelines. With our garments, I conducted comprehensive CO2 and water-usage assessments for fabric selections and led the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) applications and audits.

Outcomes

  • B Corp certification achieved for Starboard; recertification expanded to cover the full group
  • Group onboarded to the Fair Labour Association
  • Recognised for environmental and social commitments through B Corp, FLA membership, and GOTS certification
  • Scopes 1, 2, and 3 carbon footprint calculated and reduction planning initiated
  • SOMWR achieved GOTS certification for materials and supply chain
Awards & Industry Leadership06 — Starboard & Severne

World Sailing Sustainability Award, Olympic selection, and leading the iQFOiL environmental committee

The windsurfing brands selected for the Olympics!

The challenge

We challenged the norm. Making any type of gear has an impact, and when it comes to watersports hardware and the many materials used, it gets trickier! We knew that change has to come from somewhere, and we wanted to demonstrate that genuine environmental leadership is possible from the highest level of the sport. Bidding to be the Olympic equipment supplier means you have to show your commitment in practice.

The approach

I put Starboard forward for the World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award, built the campaign, and led the public vote effort that secured the win. Alongside this, I worked on the sustainability case that supported the iQFOiL's selection as the Paris 2024 Olympic windsurfing equipment, the first time sustainability credentials played a meaningful role in Olympic equipment selection. After selection, I led the iQFOiL class environmental committee, bringing together brands, athletes, and event organisers to set shared standards. I also designed and launched a take-back scheme for masts and booms, creating a route for end-of-life hardware to be collected and recycled rather than going to landfill.

"Sustainability is at the forefront of Starboard's initiatives and they are a true leader in this space."

— Dan Reading, Head of Sustainability, World Sailing

Outcomes

  • Won the 2020 World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award through public vote
  • Sustainability credentials contributed to the iQFOiL being selected as Paris 2024 Olympic Men's and Women's windsurfing equipment
  • Led the iQFOiL class environmental committee, setting shared standards across brands and events
  • Launched a take-back scheme for masts and booms, diverting end-of-life hardware from landfill into recycling
  • Starboard recognised as a B Corp certified organisation and partner to multiple ocean NGOs
JEDI Strategy07 — Dryrobe

Building a JEDI Strategy: making the outdoors more representative and inclusive

Driving Dryrobe®'s Justice, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy.

The challenge

Through the annual stakeholder engagement survey, Dryrobe® received community feedback asking for more representative marketing. At the same time, new B Corp standards meant its JEDI approach needed strengthening. The work was also personal. As a half-Filipino, half-British woman who dips, surfs, hikes and paddles in the South West, the aim was to help make sure people of colour feel they belong in outdoor spaces.

The approach

The strategy was built in stages. An internal survey and workshops led by Opening Up the Outdoors (OUTO) set the brand's baseline, covering systemic racism, the current climate of race in the outdoor industry, and inclusive company culture. A JEDI steering committee was established with annual reporting on progress. An internal Ethical Content guide set out which terms to use and avoid, how to gather and use content ethically, and what is expected when representing social identities. Partners were chosen for their work in the outdoor industry, including OUTO, Seaful, Swim Sistas and Icebreakers to amplify the experiences of people of colour in the outdoors. Dryrobe® also published a Responsible Lobbying Policy on how the company advocates for change.

Outcomes

  • Dryrobe® established a JEDI strategy with feedback loops and annual reporting where none existed before
  • Strategy designed to develop over time, with progress shared through annual reporting
  • Early signs of increased representation of people of colour within marketing campaigns
  • Publically published JEDI Commitment, Inclusive Hiring Policy, and Responsible Lobbying Policy
Charity & Nature08 — Dryrobe

Charity and Nature Partnerships: directing business resources towards restoration and access

Initiating and overseeing Dryrobe®'s charity and nature partnerships. Spanning environmental restoration, community access to the outdoors, and mental health and wellbeing and directing more than 1% of revenue to grassroots projects.

The challenge

Time in nature supports mental health and a sense of connection, but not everyone has equal access to it, and the natural environments people rely on need restoring. The aim was to direct business resources towards both: restoring nature, and helping more people get outdoors.

The approach

I initiated and oversaw Dryrobe®'s membership and partnerships, from early partnership development through to integration. Partners spanned nature restoration, community access, and mental health and wellbeing through the outdoors. Environmental partners included the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere, SeaTrees, the Devon Environment Foundation and Save The Waves Coalition, with a core focus on grassroots projects where real action happens. Dryrobe® created The Warmth Project as part of the brand, always donating a huge chunk of revenue to these projects, supporting communities the brand's products are used in, and backing projects that would otherwise not succeed but were taking genuine positive action.

Outcomes

  • Supported 34+ organisations financially during Tasmin's time at Dryrobe®
  • Directed more than 1% of revenue to charity and NGO partners
  • Partnerships spanned nature restoration, community access, and mental health through the outdoors
  • Grassroots-first approach ensured funding reached projects with real on-the-ground impact
Mentoring09 — OUTO Changemakers

Mentoring with OUTO Changemakers

Acting as a mentor on the Opening Up the Outdoors UK Changemaker Programme. Supporting emerging leaders from underrepresented communities to create programmes that increase belonging in outdoor spaces.

The challenge

The outdoor industry lacks representation from people from underrepresented communities. The OUTO UK Changemaker Programme aims to lower those barriers by pairing Changemakers with mentors in the industry to help them create programmes that increase the feeling of belonging for underrepresented communities in the outdoors.

The approach

The role is to act as a sounding board and support for a Changemaker across the autumn. Drawing on experience in JEDI strategy, authentic storytelling, partnerships between brands and non-profits, and project management to help Changemakers develop and deliver their ideas.

Outcomes

  • Currently supporting one Changemaker through the programme
  • I will be excited to share more when the time is right!
Climate Advocacy010 — Dryrobe & POW UK

Climate Advocacy with Protect Our Winters UK

Leading Dryrobe®'s partnership with Protect Our Winters UK and driving the Send It For Climate election campaign. Mobilising the outdoor community to vote on climate issues during the 2024 UK general election.

The challenge

The outdoor community relies on the natural world and is directly affected by climate change, but many people who enjoy it don't have an obvious way to act on that concern. In 2024, the UK general election came around very quickly and offered a moment when people could use their vote to support climate-focused policy. Protect Our Winters UK (POW UK) is an outdoor climate action charity that helps outdoor people become climate advocates. Dryrobe® wanted to support that work and to build its own understanding of its environmental impact.

The approach

I led Dryrobe®'s partnership with POW UK and drove the election campaign from the brand into marketing. Dryrobe® supported POW UK's Send It For Climate campaign, which encouraged people to research candidates' environmental positions and pledge to vote on issues affecting coasts, trails and wild spaces, shared key voting deadlines from registering through to polling day, and framed the UK's outdoor community (around 25 million people) as a group with collective influence on climate action.

Outcomes

  • Dryrobe® publicly backed the Send It For Climate campaign during the 2024 election period
  • Every order dispatched during the campaign period included a 'Send it for Climate' insert encouraging customers to vote with the climate in mind
  • Marketing campaigns across social media and newsletters drove customer action
  • Partnership included Carbon Literacy Training from POW UK for the full Dryrobe® team
